The Commodification of Love

The Commodification of Love There’s always another holiday lurking somewhere around the corner: Valentine’s Day. Mother’s Day. Sweetest Day. Birthdays. Christmas. We’ve programmed ourselves to give and receive gifts on these and many other holidays to show our love for one another. We’ve been told gift-giving is one of our “love languages.” This is ridiculous, and yet we treat it as gospel: I love youâ€"see, here’s this expensive shiny thing I bought you. Gift-giving is not a love language any more than Pig Latin is a Romance language; rather, gift-giving is a destructive cultural imperative in our society, and we’ve bought it (literally) hook, line, and sinker. We’ve become consumers of love. The grotesque idea we can somehow commodify love is nauseating. We often give gifts to show our love because we are troubled by real love. Buying diamonds is not evidence of everlasting devotion: commitment, trust, understandingâ€"these are indications of devotion. Gift-giving is, by definition, transactionalâ€"but love is not a transaction. Love is transcendent: it transcends language and material possessions, and it can be shown only by our thoughts, actions, and intentions. Perhaps Jonathan Franzen said it best: “Love is about bottomless empathy, born out of the heart’s revelation that another person is every bit as real as you are. To love a specific person, and to identify with his or her struggles and joys as if they were your own, you have to surrender some of your self.” This doesn’t mean there’s something necessarily wrong with buying a gift for someone, but don’t fool yourself by associating that gift with loveâ€"love doesn’t work that way. Does it Work? Supporters of racial profiling could argue that using this technique benefits police to target criminals as well as making more arrest (Thomsen, 2011, p. 99). According to Reddick (2004) there is evidence that supports that if the United States allowed the Federal Bureau of Investigation to use profiling on the twentieth hijacker then the events that occurred on September 11 could have been avoided (p. 155). However, many critics state that law enforcements are infringing on the constitutional rights and civil liberties of ethnic minorities within the United States (Ward, 2002, p. 726). The United States government has the duty to protect the citizens as well as to protect the ideals and ethical standards, in which, the United States were built on. United States (1971), the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that national security can not be placed above the First Amendment, which protects the freedom of the press (Fauchon, 2004, p. 158). Fauchon (2004) states the racial profiling has never worked in the U.S. and will never work in the future. Racial profiling affects a person’s emotions and can fuel more cruel crimes to happen (p. 159). Fauchon (2004) argues that targeting behavior rather than the appearance of a person is much more successful (p. 157). Mutability of identity in The Road and The Handmaids Tale

â€Å"Dystopian literature invites the reader to reflect upon the mutability of identity.† By comparing The Handmaid’s Tale and The Road, discuss how far, and in what ways the two novels support or refute this claim? Within dystopian literature, identity is something that can be seen as an individual’s most core and precious element. Exposed against a scarcity of freedom in self-expression, we can begin to fully appreciate and understand the importance in the role of identity as well as its robustness. The role of identity and its manipulation is often explored within dystopian literature to exemplify weaknesses in human psychology as well as to destroy false images of strength and superiority that we apply to ourselves. In both The Road and†¦show more content†¦If the whole story is just a memory, many of the â€Å"facts† are again adjusted to fit the narrator’s ex-post perspective. As Offred’s perceptions of reality seem to merge more and more with her imagination we are made aware that isolated under the regime of Gilead, sanity is at least something Offred has to now fight for. The Dancing Girl of Izu free essay sample

When I first read this story in high school, I was hooked by his timeless lyrical style and exoticism. I like his style. It’s so beautiful and sorrowful. When I read his short stories, I would feel very calm, and I could even feel what the characters in the stories felt. I like that feeling, because I’m also a dissociable boy like him when I was young. But I can imagine he had a much more sorrowful experience than me. Yes, it was true or he couldn’t write so a sorrowful story like â€Å"The Dancing girl of Izu†. His words would have resonance for me, I had an unhappy childhood, some pictures made me scared even though I am twenty now. Compared to Kawabata, my experience isn’t worth a saying. His life was blighted by sorrow and loneliness, his childhood was repressed and solitary, he was born in Osaka, Japan, into a well-established doctor’s family. We will write a custom essay sample on The Dancing Girl of Izu or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page He became an orphan at four, and then he lived with his grandparents. He also had an old sister who was taken by an aunt, but she died when he was eleven, and he only saw his old sister once when he was ten. His grandmother died when he was seven, and his grandfather died when he was fifteen. These sorrowful experiences made him become dissociable and distorted. If I were him, I don’t know if I could face it. Then Kawabata started to try writing some short stories. When he was still a university student, he re-established the Tokyo University literary magazine â€Å"New Tide of Thought†. There he published his first short story â€Å"A View from Yasukuni Festival†. After he graduated, Kawabata wrote â€Å"The Dancing Girl of Izu† in 1926 and received the acclaim. This story is very short, it’s about a high school student meets a young dancer on a walking trip down Izu Peninsula, and he falls in love with this young dancer finally. You could read whole story in one hour, it’s very simple, there aren’t any words about love, but you could feel that they fell in love with each other slowly, no epic promise, no honeyed words, but this story is very touching. Every time I read â€Å"The Dancing Girl of Izu†, I would be touched by their words and behaviors, their eyes and their soliloquies. I never get tired of reading this book. When the hero first saw the young dancing girl, he was well disposed towards her. The dancing girl was perhaps sixteen, it was a beautiful age. The hero sat and watched the dancing girl very closely and he did surrender himself to young dancing girl’s charms. When the hero heard they would leave, he felt very impatient. His mind danced off after hearing them getting to leave, he cut to the heart to let them go, especially the dancing girl. He couldn’t fall sleep for a long time that night, â€Å"The rain quieted to a sprinkle, the sky over the pass cleared. I felt it could wait no longer. † (Seidensticker, 68) That was a gloomy rainy night. Time hours wore on, the hero felt more and more sad. Because he knew they can’t be together. There is a wall plug in their midst. â€Å"Dear me, the child’s come to a dangerous age,† the older woman said, arching her eyebrows as she tossed over a cloth. The girl wiped tensely at this tea. The remark somehow startled me. I felt the excitement aroused by the old woman at the tea-house begin to mount. †(Seidensticker, 70) Maybe you don’t understand the behavior that older woman did, why did this older woman arch her eyebrows suddenly? The attitude changed a lot. Because the hierarchy and the feudal system their love affair is predestined to be impossible, artists are the most low-class occupation at that time in Japan. The older woman feels this dancing girl had grown fond of the young high-school student, so she just wants to tell a joke about them. But suddenly she realized that their occupation is so low-class, then she just shut up. And also the dancing girl knows that, so she wiped tensely at that tea. The remark somehow startled the hero. He felt the excitement aroused by the old woman at the tea-house begin to amount. Then the older woman changed the topic immediately. These behaviors indicate that the hierarchy and the feudal system are so bad for people at that time in Japan. It made my heart ache to see such scene. Distinctions between social classes were rigid and clearly defined. Actually, when I read this story, I would always thought of my first girlfriend. I think our story is very similar to this story, she has sparkling big dark eyes and double eyelids like this dancing girl, and it’s so beautiful. Her eyes always sparkled as she gazed at my eyes without blinking when I held her close in my arms. It’s so pretty, I missed her so much. This paragraph reminds me of her cute face and our sorrowful but happy story: we spent an unforgettable time together for about only 21 days. I never forgot that. On the summer of 2012, I came back to my hometown to see my parents and my relatives, I was so happy, you could say this is a long vacation. I never imagined meeting her that day. My best friend treated me to drink hot tea in the coffeehouse, he said he also invited two girls to come, they are his friends. Then I met my first girlfriend, I had grown fond of this girl when I first saw her. She is so cute; I like to see her smile. Then she took down my phone number, she said she was also well disposed towards me. I was so excited that I can’t fall sleep that night. So we just started to date in public, we fell in love with each other slowly. But there are only twenty-one days left at that time, it meant that after twenty-one days, I had to go back to here-America. We are both so sorrowful, she still wanted to by my girlfriend. She told me: â€Å"I love you, very, very much, I just want to be with you . Can we still keep the relationship? I don’t want to lose you. I will try my best to wait for you, until you came back again. † I didn’t know what to say. She was in China and I was in America, how could we maintain relationship? Off-site love? It was so hard to maintain relationship. But she said: â€Å"I trust you, and trust me, please. I will wait for you. † She was a girl of settled convictions. I was touched by her words. Actually, I really wanted to be with her, I didn’t want to lose her. I was touched by her words. I promised. But finally I gave her the air. When I thought of my words I said at that time, I felt extremely embarrassed. I thought our love affair is predestined to fail finally, I didn’t want her to wait for me, and I didn’t want to waste her time. We are both so young, things always change. But I felt so sorry about her; I didn’t know whether I did wrong. I don’t know. I just missed her, very, very much. Like this hero, he fell in love with that dancing girl at first sight and it was his first love, and he was not supposed to fall in love with this girl. Finally, the dancing girl waved her white handkerchief to the hero from quay as a goodbye. I couldn’t forget this sight. I was close to tears when I read here. Towards the end of the story they still didn’t tell how much they love each other. But they began to realize they had strong emotion with each other. Even though they can’t express in words, but for sure, there is a place for each other, deep inside their heart. He was not supposed to fall in love with this girl, and it was his first love, finally this love gave him nothing but misery. But I believe they had a happy and memorable time. I like this story very much, because it’s so sorrowful but beautiful and I had a same experience. When I was reading this story, I even thought of that young dancing girl is my first lover. It was just like a dream; finally you had to wake up. Maybe this is the reason why the people always miss the past people, past happiness. Anyway, I will cherish the memory of my first love, and this beautiful, sorrowful story. Citation . Bombs on Japanese Essays

Bombs on Japanese Essays Bombs on Japanese Essay Bombs on Japanese Essay A figure of analyses have been conducted on the bombing action that was carried out in the month of August the twelvemonth 19 40 five by the US on Nipponese metropoliss. This bombardment was really important since it resulted to a really big figure of deceases and farther effects which are still apparent in some people including those caused by radiation. The chief ground as to why this action has attracted a broad scope to philosophical analysis is that ; despite the fact that so many people died from the bombardment. US authorities still keep it that their action was grounded on morality. They argue that they had saved greater harm from ensuing from war and should be thanked instead than condemned. ETHICS ANALYSIS Introduction When Second World War was coming to an terminal. US grew impatient and decided to rush up its stoping. US made usage of atomic bombs to assail Japan which managed to kill a big Nipponese population and injuring a larger figure as good. This action carried out by US has been widely analyzed by philosophers with John Stuart being one of them. John has based his analysis on the bombardment morality which contributes to a deeper apprehension of events that took topographic point. causes every bit good as effects that accompanied the action. He begins with observing that the bombing action was among the most important events that took topographic point during the Second World War. The existent bombardment took topographic point in two topographic points ; one was dropped in Nagasaki while the other bombardment took topographic point in Hiroshima. Two hundred thousand people died instantly the bombardment was carried out while about one hundred and 30 thousand more people lost their lives in a period of five old ages that followed. The subsequent deceases were caused by aftermath effects of bombing including injury and radiation. Further more. about three hundred thousand people are found to endure from bombing effects in several ways including disablement. Daniels ( 2008 pp 37-40 ) Morality of US Bombings on Japan Despite the fact that bombing caused great harm on Japan citizens. American authorities has non taken a minute to apologise for its annihilating actions. On the contrary. Americans led by Harry Truman have opted to warrant their actions giving moral grounds as to why they attacked Japan even after they had lost war. One such case where this has happened is when Truman was composing about the issue in 19 50 eight where he commented that he did non hold any reserves refering the bombardment. These words reached the Japanese in good clip and metropolis council of Hiroshima criticized Truman’s words observing that they signified great befoulment to people affected by the bombardment. Alternatively of worsening his statement. Truman arranged a meeting where he addressed an American imperativeness conference sketching justification for bombardment. He said that Japan tempted the US to move since they had attacked them at the Harbor of Pearl earlier before the bombardment and this was merely a pay back . Truman’s remarks were backed by other Americans who were eager to demo the morality of bombing among them being Paul Fussell. who had a incredulity in war. Paul argued that retaliation from US did non stand for a sensible motivation though it was still America’s motivation when it was destructing Nipponese Empire. Paul besides point out on disbelieve on Americans who regard the 19 40 five bombardment as an action of force that they did non back up since during the existent clip of bombardment. about every American was delighted. The delectation did non merely come from the fact that war period was shortened which saved a great figure of Americans from diing but besides for the ground that Nipponese deserved to be punished for assailing American military personnels at the seaport of Pearl. More grounds. of Americans’ delectation was noted where about 20 three per centum of them suggested on dropping of more bombs on Nipponese. Mearsheimer ( 2001 pp 17-24 )

10 Questions to Ask For-Profit Online Colleges

10 Questions to Ask For-Profit Online Colleges Not all for-profit colleges are scams. In fact, some offer students flexibility and a career-oriented learning style that can be difficult to find elsewhere. On the other hand, some online for-profit programs rake in big money while leaving students with lots of debt and few job prospects. If you’re considering enrolling in a for-profit online college, hold off on signing that first tuition check until you get answers to these ten questions: 1. What is the colleges accreditation status? You’ll want to make sure that your school’s accreditation is recognized by the United States Department of Education. The most transferable form of accreditation comes from the six nationally-recognized regional accrediting bodies. 2. Is the school now (or has it ever been) on one of the federal financial watch lists? The federal government recently released a list of colleges that are being monitored due to concerning financial behavior. Although the list isn’t comprehensive, you’ll want to make sure your college isn’t on it. 3. What is the colleges graduation rate? Find out what percent of students who start the program end up graduating. If this number is particularly low, it’s a good indicator that the school may not be providing a quality experience or enough student support. 4. How many students who graduate from the program are able to find a career in their field? The federal government is starting to crack down on for-profit programs that charge a lot for tuition and leave students in the dark when it comes to career prospects. Make sure your investment is worthwhile - you’ll want to know that a reasonable percentage of graduates in your program are able to find employment. 5. How long does it actually take most students to graduate from this program? It’s likely that the average is longer than 4 years. But, if students are taking 6-8 years to earn an undergraduate degree, that might be a sign to look elsewhere. 6. How much student debt does the average student in this program take on? Tuition prices may be posted. But, how much debt are students actually accruing? When you factor in student fees, additional coursework, textbooks, and graduation charges, expenses start to add up. You don’t want to graduate with a photography degree and $100,000 of student debt. Make sure that your debt won’t be too challenging to manage with your expected income. 7. What kind of access to career development does the school offer? Traditional schools tend to offer job fairs, employer meet-and-greets, resume reviews, and other career development options. Does your for-profit program provide any services to help put your degree to use? 8. What other schools or parent companies is this for-profit program connected with? Some for-profit schools are part of larger conglomerate of schools. Sometimes, when a for-profit program fails, it takes new life with a new name. Do a bit of research into your college’s history and make sure they’ve been thriving for a while. 9. What are the advantages of choosing this school over a non-profit alternative? Some for-profit schools offer legitimate advantages. They may be able to let you focus on your career rather than saddle you with too many general ed requirements. Or, they may be able to help you finish a degree in less time and with less expense. However, this isn’t always the case. Find out by comparing your for-profit options with similar non-profit and public colleges. 10. How does this school track their statistics? Don’t just ask the above questions to a telephone recruiter and call it a day. Learn where and how they are collecting this information. Then, double-check the numbers with outside sources. Don’t rely on any school to give you the full picture without your own research to back it up. Jamie Littlefield is a writer and instructional designer. Critically evaluate the claim that employee involvement and Essay

Critically evaluate the claim that employee involvement and participation initiatives contribute to increased employee motivation and productivity - Essay Example Employee participation gives an impression of value and power to the employees in the organization. Employee participation and involvement in the matters of enterprises provides maximum benefits to the firm as the employees work more honestly in order to maintain their records in the organization. The terms employee involvement and employee participation were first used in 1970s (Farnham, 1993, p.361). After the introduction of these terms a number of companies adopted employee participation programs which were designed with an aim to create better workplace plans and implement such operational programs which would bring benefits for the firm and the workers. This kind of programs, which are known as managed work panels, action commissions or employee-administrator committees, usually offer a forum in which workers may present suggestions or thoughts to administration relating to workplace topics and get administration reply. Many administrators judge that this sort of worker-employer teamwork is extremely advantageous to both parties and valuable for the corporation itself to participate in a worldwide economy. The employment department carried out a survey of employee involvement programs practiced by 377 British organizations and observed that employee involvement raises with the company size and value of financial involvement plans have raised from 53% in 1988 to 77% in 1991(Farnham and Pimlott,1995,p.421). The survey further tells that most of the companies which were surveyed have a program formed which can help the employees to join them. Employers also play a major role in encouraging the employees to work harder. These days the employers consider it as an important duty to converse with the employees and make the relations as better as possible. They are further forming employee committees which would help the employees to come forward with their problems. These committees help in decreasing the gap between the employers and the workers. This further creates an environment of security amongst the employees and would encourage them to work harder. The employers which emphasize on th e employee morale and relations get the benefits accordingly. These benefits can be in the form of high productivity and good quality. Furthermore the employees would not want to keep a distance from the management if all their demands are being met. Here the employers are also taking the advantage as the risk of strikes and employee co-ordination can be avoided. Employee involvement and participation can be divided in to different forms and hence by using these forms we may conclude if employee involvement and participation initiatives contribute to increased employee motivation and productivity or not. The first form of employee involvement is communication which is considered to be one of the most important methods of catching employees' and employers' attention. Some administrators find it worse to use communication with their employees in order to solve problems. However the CBI concluded that communication, itself, is not responsible for the occurrence of any problem but it is the matter of changing views and approaches. Communication should be used to identify the differences and understand the problems rather than criticizing and creating problems. Employees' involvements in the company using communications motivate

Views on the U.S. Constitution Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Views on the U.S. Constitution - Research Paper Example The first three points out distinct rights and responsibilities of the three branches of the national government, the legislative branch, the executive branch. The fourth is about the states and their rights as well. In all the provisions covered by the four major parts, it is clear that these are still very general. This may be considered as a sign that the government itself, led by the Founding Fathers, was still wanting in experience. However, as an outline of governance, it can be said that the US Constitution had already provided the bases of what kind of society and country would be built in the succeeding years. It is clear that it's being less detailed had become an advantage. This provided the succeeding governments and policymakers the opportunity to introduce amendments to the Constitution itself and to create laws that would further add substance to it. Aside from the role of legislation in improving the Constitution, the judicial branch also contributed to making it more applicable to current realities. This is done through judicial reviews, wherein the Supreme Court interprets the Constitution and applies it in order to judge certain cases. If no such judicial reviews or legislation were done, the US Constitution would certainly be inadequate and as a document that was created immediately after the country was founded, it would have lost its relevance already. The major strengths of the US Constitution may not be found in its original version or the one ratified in 1787. Instead, it can be found in the succeeding amendments made, particularly the Bill of Rights. It is in the Bill of Rights that every citizen in the country is granted is assured of his rights as a both as a human being and as an American. The Bill of Rights is essentially what makes the Constitution and the country not just democratic in words but also in practice. The original version that was ratified in the early years of the nation was basically meant to establish a governmenta l organization so that the business of ruling a country could immediately begin. It was only correct that such concern was immediately addressed more than anything else at that time. However, once the government is in place, it was urgent that the rights of the citizens be immediately enshrined in the Constitution. In fact, â€Å"the great strengths of the US Constitution lie in the civil and political freedoms it accords citizens† (Blau & Moncada18). The original US Constitution definitely had many flaws and weaknesses. One glaring weakness was that there was no Bill of Rights at all. Again, this may be explained by the fact that the framers of the Constitution were more concerned with the organization of the government, which was only natural considering that the country had just been established and a sovereign state had to take over. This weakness, however, was promptly taken care of with the First Amendment and the rest of the Bill of Rights. The US Constitution still ha s a weakness though. It is clear that the states have been granted with too many rights that it would seem that the federal government would not be able to perform its responsibilities the well (Kommers & Finn 39). The federal government has to refer to the will of the states whose perspectives may be based more on what they individually see as distinct governing bodies instead of being a part of one nation.  Ã‚

At last he comes to the high Himalayas, where his people had come from, and finds a deserted shrine high above a mountain village, where he makes his home. For many years he lives there, fed by the devoted villagers, making friends with the wild creatures round about, monkeys and deer and bear, and pondering on the meaning of existence. Then one year come weeks and weeks of rain, and one night he is awakened by the wild creatures, and sees that the mountain is falling. He hastens down the hillside in the icy rain. With all the authority of his previous life, he wakes the sleeping villagers, and urges them up to high ground across the valley. They are just in time before a massive landslip. The people are safe, but the Baghat, crippled by his exertions, is dead. They build a shrine in his memory, but no-one knows that, in a previous life, he was Sir Purun Dass.

Teaching Technique For Students With Learning Disabilities...

My research started by observing the teacher leading the After School Action Program (ASAP) in which I volunteer. Teaching methods were administered to all students to include students with disabilities. While conducting my observation, several questions arose which lead to my research. Finding the appropriate teaching technique for students with learning disabilities will benefit all level students which will inevitably help in filling the gap within the general education system. First, I will discuss my observations to explain what happened and how the teacher used different approaches on students. Then I will explain how these observations were fundamental in my research. Finally, provide a few examples of teaching methods that were proven effective in inclusion process. Because of this, I am understanding more of the teaching approaches being used to achieve the desired outcome. Ultimately, this observation will help me better prepare for my future endeavors as a special educati on teacher. During multiple observations with the teacher, there have been a few techniques that were implemented to enhance students learning experiences. First, in problem-solving issues, the teacher will ask the student what approaches they will use in order to solve a problem. Another approach the teacher implemented was having the students attempt their own theory, even though the teacher knew the theory was incorrect, the focus was not to achieve the right answer but for the studentShow MoreRelatedI Am Observing For The After School Action Program Essay1724 Words   |  7 Pagesthe critical and analytical thinking in students while developing leadership skills.
